Jozef Lupták
Jozef Lupták, born in Bratislava, Slovakia began to play cello and other instruments (piano, drums, guitars) at the age of six. He studied cello at The Music Conservatory and Academy of Music Arts in Bratislava and continued postgraduate performance course at the Royal Academy of Music in London with Robert Cohen. He had master-classes with many other leading cellists including Parisot, Shafran, Tsutsumi and Monighetti. He is laureate and winner of several national and international music competitions.

As a solo cellist, he has played with established conductors such as Parrott, Lohlávek and Mogrelia. In addition to his busy solo schedule, Jozef regularly performs with chamber music partners Eleonora Kutová, Gabriela Demeterová, Ronald Ebesta, as well as international artists Robert Cohen, Rena Sharon, Vladimir Mendelsson, Edgar Meyer, Beny Schmid, Peter Mikulá, Eduard Brunner and the Colorado String Quartet. He is co-founder of the chamber group, Opera Aperta and joins the Veni Ensemble for special performances.

Jozef´s current discography includes the World Premiere recording of Vladimír Godár´s Music for Cello, a two CD set of the complete Bach Solo Cello Suites, as well as an upcoming project entitled Cello, a recording of five new compositions inspired by Bach´s 1st Suite and Lupták’s own improvisations.

Jozef´s search for his own musical expression often brings him to the works of many contemporary composers such as Tenney, Krauze, Godár, Matej, Ayres and Hatrík (to name a few), which has resulted in Lupták’s involvement with a number of world premiered compositions and recordings. A unique and regular feature in Lupták’s performances are his improvisations combining solo cello along with his voice and oral rhythms all at the same time! Outside the classical world, Jozef has collaborated with the American/Irish duo, Jeff Johnson and Brian Dunning, as well as Slovakian legendary Art-Rock keyboardist, Marian Varga.

Jozef is also the founder and artistic director of the successful international festival of chamber music, Convergence. When not touring in Europe, Canada and the USA, he resides in Bratislava, Slovakia with his wife and two children.
